Sustainability policy of Tourist Tours Albania

Purpose

We recognize that our country’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and local communities are at the heart of our business. This sustainability policy outlines our commitment to protecting these assets and ensuring that tourism benefits both visitors and albanians, now and in the future.

We aim to operate tours that conserve Albania’s environment, support local communities, and promote cultural respect. Our goal is to contribute to a tourism model that is sustainable, ethical, and aligned with global best practices.

Scope

This Sustainability Policy applies to all activities of Tourist Tours Albania and guides the conduct of our staff, guides, suppliers, and partners. It also covers our guests, the communities we interact with, and the natural and cultural sites we visit, ensuring that all operations are carried out with responsibility and respect for sustainability principles.

Sustainability management & legal compliance

Tourist Tours Albania commits to managing all operations responsibly, in line with Travelife sustainability standards and applicable Albanian laws. We ensure compliance with tourism, environmental, labor, and health & safety regulations, and work with partners who share these commitments.

Also commits to continuous improvement of sustainability practices, including the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of our sustainability policy, with dedicated personnel and resources to achieve our sustainability goals.

Sustainability performance is tracked and documented. Feedback from guests, staff, and communities is actively considered to improve practices and demonstrate accountability.

Internal management: social policy and human rights

Tourist Tours Albania is committed to respecting human rights and social responsibility in all aspects of its operations. We recognize that our employees are our biggest asset for delivering meaningful travel experiences to our customers. We ensure fair and safe working conditions for all employees, guides, and contracted staff, with equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and respect for diversity particularly with regard to compensation, promotion, distribution of benefits, and professional development opportunities.

We uphold labor rights in accordance with Albanian law and international standards, including fair wages, reasonable working hours, and the right to join representative organizations. Harassment, forced labor, child labor, or any form of exploitation, are strictly prohibited in any part of our operations or supply chain.

Internal management: environment

Environmental management of office operations

Tourist Tours Albania is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its operations and promoting sustainable practices across all activities. Key commitments include:

  • Follow all local and national regulations concerning environmental law.
  • Energy efficiency: Reduce energy consumption in offices, through efficient practices and equipment. Energy consumption is monitored regularly through monthly electricity invoices, allowing the company to track usage patterns, identify inefficiencies, and implement targeted reduction measures. All energy saving initiatives are evaluated with a reasonable return on investment, ensuring that measures are both environmentally and economically sustainable.

Practical actions implemented by the company include:

  • Using air conditioning in energy-saving (Eco) mode, where compressors and fans operate only as needed to maintain comfort.
    • Ensuring all office equipment, lighting, and air conditioning are switched off after office hours or during breaks, rather than left in sleep mode.
    • Preferring low-energy equipment for new purchases, such as laptops instead of desktops, which consume less electricity and support remote work flexibility.
    • Encouraging responsible use of resources by staff, including minimizing unnecessary electricity usage and monitoring overall consumption trends.
  • Water conservation: Implement measures to minimize water use in offices.
  • Fix any leaks promptly to prevent water waste.
    • Encourage staff to turn off taps immediately when not in use and o maintain good water habits, reinforcing a culture of conservation.
  • Waste management: The office generates very little waste, as most administrative work is done digitally.
  • Minimize printing as much as possible, even when using external printing services.
    • Avoid single-use items whenever possible and reuse materials such as folders, envelopes, and other office supplies.
  • Sustainable transport: Minimize unnecessary travel, and encourage low-impact mobility options where possible.
  • Paper and resource reduction: Favor digital documentation, reduce paper use. Print only when necessary.
  • Environmental awareness: The company ensures that both employees are fully informed about sustainable practices, including waste reduction, responsible water and energy use, and minimizing the environmental impact of business travel.
  • Pollution reduction: No hazardous chemichals are used in the office. The company ensures that all chemichal use in the office is minimal, safe and environmentally responsible.
  • Monitoring and improvement: Regularly assess environmental performance and implement improvements in line with Travelife sustainability standards.

Carbon management of office operations

Tourist Tours Albania is committed to reducing carbon emissions from its office operations and daily activities. Key actions include:

  • Low impact commuting: Staff walk or use low-carbon transport options whenever going to the office.
  • Remote work efficiency: Maximize working from home to reduce energy and transport emissions.
  • Digital practices: Use electronic communication and documentation to reduce paper usage and printing related carbon emissions.
  • Business travel practices: Business related travel is kept to a minimum. When a meeting with business partners requires air travel, mostly only one of the two staff members travels, thereby significantly reducing the environmental impact.
  • Monitoring and awareness: Track practices that reduce emissions and seek simple improvements over time in line with Travelife standards.

Land use

Tourist Tours Albania does not own any buildings or land. The company operates from a rented office space, and all activities related to tours take place in public areas or at partner locations such as hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and tourist sites. Tourist Tours Albania is committed to responsible land use across all aspects of our operations. In our rented office, we ensure that space is utilized efficiently and sustainably, minimizing environmental impact. We implement practices such as energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and the use of sustainable resources wherever possible. By managing our office operations responsibly, we contribute to the broader goal of environmental stewardship while maintaining an efficient and functional workspace.

Inbound partner agencies

Tourist Tours Albania does not collaborate with other inbound tour companies. We organize the tours directly, subcontracting services such as guides, transportation, and accommodation, while continuously monitoring and managing the development of each tour.

Transport

As part of its commitment to responsible tourism, Tourist Tours Albania aims to minimize the environmental and social impacts associated with the transport used during its tours. Although all transport services are provided through external suppliers, we actively cooperate with them to ensure safe, responsible, and sustainable mobility for our guests.

Tourist Tours Albania aims to:

  • Work with companies using modern, lower-emission vehicles.
  • Encourage responsible use of air-conditioning and heating.
  • Prioritize suppliers committed to upgrading to cleaner technologies over time.
  • Follow eco-driving practices (smooth acceleration, proper tire pressure, avoiding aggressive driving).
  • Plan routes efficiently to reduce travel distances and fuel consumption.
  • Prevent any pollution, including fuel leaks, oil spills, or waste disposal into nature or waterways.
  1. Coach travel

Coaches are the primary mode of transport for our group tours. We prioritize working with reputable coach companies that maintain a fleet of modern, energy-efficient vehicles. These vehicles are regularly maintained to ensure optimal performance and lower emissions.

  • Efficiency: Coaches are chosen for their fuel efficiency and comfort, with a focus on reducing emissions per passenger. We support the transition towards low-emission, hybrid coaches as available.
  • Group travel: By using coaches for group tours, we significantly reduce the number of individual vehicles on the road, lowering the overall carbon footprint of our clients’ travel.
  1. Bicycle tours

To promote eco-friendly tourism, we offer guided bicycle tours as an alternative mode of transport, allowing tourists to explore Albania’s natural beauty in a sustainable way.

  • Local and sustainable: Cycling encourages minimal environmental impact, as it uses no fuel and produces zero emissions. It also allows our guests to experience the local environment in a more intimate and sustainable way.
  • Promoting active travel: We actively promote cycling as a healthy, low-impact form of transportation, benefiting both the environment and our guests’ well-being.

We ensure that:

  • Bikes are maintained regularly and kept safe for guest use.
  • Guests receive clear instructions on safety and responsible cycling.
  • Local suppliers providing bicycles follow good practices for equipment maintenance and safety.
  1. Taxi services for short distances

Because public transportation in Albania is not yet sufficiently reliable or safe to meet the scheduling needs of our tour groups, we occasionally arrange taxi transportation (only for shrt transfers) for some travelers when necessary. In this case Tourist Tours aims to:

  • Work with licensed taxi companies that use hybrid or lower-emission cars when possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary taxi use and encourage walking for short distances when safe and appropriate.
  • Combine transfers to avoid multiple individual taxi trips whenever possible.
  1. Boat use

Boats are used only in certain tours (e.g., lake or coastal day trips). We cooperate with boat operators that:

  • Follow safety standards and carry proper permits.
  • Maintain vessels regularly to reduce fuel use and emissions.
  • Respect marine and coastal ecosystems (no wildlife disturbance, no waste disposal in water, responsible anchoring).
  • Ensure passenger safety and contribute positively to the local economy.

Continuous improvement

Tourist Tours will annually review the sustainability performance of all transport providers and identify opportunities for improvements.
We remain committed to strengthening our cooperation with partners who share our values and to adopting more sustainable transport options as they become available in Albania.

  • Treat employees fairly and follow legal labor standards.
  • Are committed to improving their sustainability performance over time.

Whenever possible, we give preference to accommodations that have sustainability certifications, or clear environmental policies.

  1. Energy efficiency

  • Cause significant environmental damage through irresponsible operations.

We reserve the right to discontinue cooperation if harmful practices are identified.

Activities & Excursions

Tourist Tours Albania is committed to offering tours and experiences that respect the environment, support local communities, and provide meaningful, low-impact engagement with Albania’s landscapes and heritage.

  1. Partner selection
  • We only work with activity providers, guides, and local communities that are legally licensed, insured, and qualified.
  • Partners should have a demonstrated commitment to sustainability, including environmental protection and social responsibility.
  • We favor local guides and enterprises to ensure that excursions directly benefit albanian communities.
  1. Environmental sustainability
  • For cycling tours: maintain bikes carefully, use durable, well-serviced equipment, ensure routes avoid damaging fragile landscapes, encourage guests to follow ‘leave no trace’ principles.
  • For hiking and camping:
    • Limit group sizes to reduce environmental footprint.
    • Use established trails, avoid vegetation damage.
  • For nature-based excursions: protect ecosystems (flora, fauna), avoid sensitive or protected habitats, strictly enforce a no-litter policy. We do not include attractions featuring captive wildlife in our tours unless they operate in full compliance with local, national, and international laws.

At Tourist Tours Albania, we take any breach of our wildlife protection standards very seriously. If a violation is identified or suspected, we follow a strict and transparent procedure:

  • Immediate investigation

We promptly investigate the situation by gathering information from staff, partners, suppliers, clients, and if needed local authorities. Our priority is to verify the facts quickly and accurately.

  • Temporary suspension of the activity

If there is reasonable concern that our standards or legal requirements are not being met, the activity is immediately suspended from our operations until the matter is resolved.

  • Cooperation with authorities

If the violation involves protected wildlife or illegal handling of animals, we cooperate fully with the relevant Albanian authorities responsible for environmental protection, animal welfare, and law enforcement.

  • Corrective measures and required improvements

We give the supplier a clear list of necessary corrective actions to bring the activity into full compliance. These may include:

  • obtaining or renewing required permits
  • improving animal welfare conditions
  • staff training
  • infrastructure improvements
  • external inspection or certification
  • Activities may resume only once full compliance is verified.

  • Termination of cooperation

If the partner fails to correct the issues or continues to violate legal and ethical standards, we permanently end the cooperation and remove the activity from our offerings.

  • Communication and transparency

We inform travelers, staff, and relevant stakeholders of any necessary changes while ensuring transparency and accountability in our decisions.

  • Continuous monitoring

After corrective measures are implemented, we conduct follow-up evaluations to ensure the standards continue to be met and no repeated violations occur.

  1. Cultural respect
  • On cultural and heritage tours, guides must treat local traditions, religious sites, and cultural landmarks with respect.
  • Obtain proper permissions when visiting private properties, sacred places, or rural communities.
  • Use local guides who are knowledgeable about local history and traditions.
  1. Community engagement and benefit
  • Ensure that a fair portion of the economic benefit goes to the local community (guides, accommodations, services).
  • Promote community-based tourism: use local family-run guesthouses, local artisans, traditional food experiences.
  • Support local employment: partner with small-scale local operators whenever possible.

Guides and local representatives

Tourist Tours Albania is committed to ensuring that the guides and local representatives we work with uphold the highest standards of professionalism, cultural respect, and sustainable tourism. As our primary contact with guests, they play a key role in delivering responsible and positive travel experiences throughout Albania.

  1. Main guide responsibility
  • Each tour is led by a designated professional guide who is responsible for the overall execution of the trip, guest support, safety, and interpretation.
  • The guide acts as the main ambassador of our sustainability values and is responsible for communicating responsible behavior and environmental awareness to guests.
  • We work with guides who are licensed by the Ministry of Tourism, experienced, and knowledgeable in areas relevant to the tour (culture, history, nature, hiking, cycling, safety, etc.).
  1. Subcontracted local representatives
  • When needed, Tourist Tours Albania may subcontract local representatives to support the main guide.
  • These representatives may assist with logistics, local coordination and regional knowledge.
  • Local representatives must follow the instructions of the main guide and operate in accordance with our sustainability standards.
  • We prioritize selecting locals from the region where the tour takes place to strengthen community involvement and local economic benefits.
  1. Sustainability responsibilities

Both guides and local representatives are expected to:

  • Promote and model responsible and sustainable practices, such as respecting nature, minimizing waste, conserving water, and following local rules.
  • Provide guests with explanations regarding Albania’s culture, heritage, ecosystems, and environmental regulations, encouraging respect for local communities and natural areas.
  • Support conservation efforts by ensuring guests stay on marked paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and respect sensitive environments.
  • Inform guests about appropriate behavior in cultural or rural settings, including etiquette, photography norms, and community respect.
  1. Fair and responsible working conditions
  • All guides and subcontracted representatives work under clear agreements outlining responsibilities, safety expectations, compensation, and required conduct.
  • We ensure fair pay that reflects experience, qualifications, and local conditions.
  • We commit to a safe, respectful, and non-discriminatory workplace for all contracted personnel.
  1. Qualification & continuous capacity building
  • We engage guides with proven qualifications and experience relevant to the tour type.
  • When necessary, we facilitate or encourage additional training in:
    • Sustainable tourism
    • Cultural and environmental interpretation
    • First aid and safety
    • Communication and group management
  • We ensure subcontracted local representatives receive appropriate briefings and guidance so they understand our sustainability goals and guest expectations.
  1. Ethical conduct & child protection

The company is committed to safeguarding children and upholding the highest ethical standards in tourism. To support this commitment, all contracted tour guides receive relevant information on recognizing, preventing, and reporting any suspected cases of child sexual exploitation. This ensures that guides:

  • Understand what constitutes sexual exploitation of children and why it is a critical human rights issue.
  • Can identify warning signs or suspicious behavior in tourism settings.
  • Are aware of the company’s zero-tolerance policy and legal responsibilities.
  • Know the proper procedures for reporting concerns safely and promptly.

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of harassment, exploitation, corruption, or child abuse.

  1. Monitoring, feedback & improvement
  • We collect guest feedback related to guide performance, sustainability communication, and cultural interpretation.
  • Guides and representatives are encouraged to report sustainability issues such as overcrowding, environmental damage, or community concerns.
  • We adjust operations and provide refresher briefings or training when needed to improve sustainability performance.

Destinations

We believe tourism should benefit, not burden, the destinations we visit. Our Destination Policy reflects our commitment to preserving Albania’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local communities, while offering our guests meaningful, authentic experiences.

Core Principles

  1. Respect and preserve natural & cultural heritage
    • We consciously design tours to protect fragile ecosystems, natural landscapes, and heritage sites (mountains, rivers, coasts, archaeological and historic sites) from overuse, pollution, or degradation.
    • We respect local traditions, architectural heritage, and ways of life in the destinations we visit, seeking to preserve, rather than commodify their authenticity.
    • We carefully manage group size, timing, and access to sensitive places (e.g., protected natural zones, historic villages, rural areas), to minimize environmental stress and avoid overtourism.
    • Since Albania hosts globally threatened species, Tourist Tours Albania and its direct service providers strictly avoid promoting or selling souvenirs that contain threatened or protected species, including plants, animals, or animal products. We also do not promote historic or archaeological artefacts unless their trade is explicitly permitted by law.
  2. Benefit local communities & economies
  • We prioritise local service providers: small guesthouses, family-run accommodations, local restaurants, local guides, artisans.
  • Our tours, such as agro-tourism, cultural heritage routes, rural experiences are designed to channel economic benefit directly to local people. For example, our Agro-Tourism Tour brings guests to rural areas, engages with farming families and traditional food producers.
  • We commit to fair and transparent partnerships, ensuring local suppliers are paid fairly and treated respectfully.
  1. Minimise environmental impact
    • We encourage low-impact modes of travel and mobility (cycling tours, hiking, self-guided nature walks) instead of heavy reliance on private vehicles. Given that our offerings include cycling, hiking, self-guided tours, and camping, we leverage more sustainable travel styles.
    • We promote “leave no trace” principles: reducing waste (particularly plastic and single-use items), encouraging proper waste disposal, and educating guests about environmental responsibility.
    • On tours involving natural habitats (beaches, mountains, rivers, coastlines, national parks, etc.) we carefully follow local regulations, encourage guests to respect flora and fauna, and avoid activities that could cause ecological damage.
  2. Foster authentic and respectful tourism
    • Our tours are designed to offer genuine experiences, cultural, rural, historical, rather than mass-tourism packages. This includes immersive routes where guests engage with local way of life, cuisine, history, and traditions.
    • We avoid promoting tours that could lead to overtourism or cultural disruption in vulnerable or remote destinations.
  3. Transparency, monitoring, and continuous Improvement
    • We regularly review and update our practices, seeking to adapt and improve based on feedback and evolving knowledge about sustainable tourism.
